What is a Child

“A child is a small person.

They are only small for a little while,

then they grow up…”

“Children who decide not to grow up

will never grow up.

They will keep a mystery inside them.

So that even as grown-ups they will be moved by little things: a ray of sunshine or a snowflake”

Any person small or large will be better off having read this book, wonderfully illustrated this is my personal favourite of Beatrice Alemagna’s books.

Alphabetics

Alphabetics is not your average alphabet book, this one features Atticus the altruistic astronaut, Butch the boisterous black bear & my favourite Virgil the vampire who (v)wears a velvet vest. An “awesome alliteration” for every letter of the alphabet each with a suitably quirky illustration to match, and complete with a glossary for all the tricky words!!

Alphabetics was written by Patrick & Traci Concepción, Patrick is the founder of California based Concepción Studios and illustrated by the amazing Dawid Ryski who, amongst lots of other work, has illustrated several other equally wonderful children’s books for Little Gestalten.

Beetle Boy (BB Book 1)

Darkus’s dad has gone missing, having moved in with his uncle he is now living next door to disgusting neighbours and having to attend a new school. All of this is making him miserable but an unlikely allie comes to his rescue in the form of a giant beetle named Baxter… Can the two of them solve the mystery of his dad’s disappearance before its too late?

Bettle Boy, the beginning of a gripping trilogy, see’s Darkus and his friends as they embark on the first step in a long battle to save the world as we know it.

The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone (Bronte book1)

Bronte Mettlestone’s parents abandoned her when she was a baby, leaving her Aunt Isabelle to raise her, along with the butler. So the news of her parents death at the hands of pirates, which incidently was delivered by telegram, is not hugely upsetting for her, but it is their will that causes the most termoil. Brontes parents have left strict instructions that she must deliver individual presents to each of her ten Aunts, who live all across the kingdoms, she must do this alone (despite only being 10 years old) and if she doesn’t then her home town of Gainsleigh will be destroyed. This they ensured by having the will faery cross stitched, so Aunt Isabelle has no choice over whether or not to let Bronte go…

And so the adventure begins, and what an adventure it is! this book was hands down our family favourite of 2019 and has already made a lasting impression on both our daughters aged 9 & 6. Its rare to find a book that the whole family is happy to read I can’t recommend it enough. Enjoy the adventure!!

The Infinite

Elle is a Leapling, meaning that she was born on the 29th February, which is very rare, but more than that Elle is a Leapling with The Gift, she can leap through time.
Ellie lives with her Nigerian straight talking grandmother, she attends the Intercalary International school, but things are tough, learning to control her Gift is challenging and on top of that she’s being bullied. A glimmer of relief is provided by a planned school trip, a “Leap” to the Time Squad headquarters in 2048, to visit the guardians of time travel, it will be the first time Elle has used her Gift. But excitement turns worry when Elle receives a mysterious warning from the future, things aren’t as they should be and Elle soon finds herself in a race against time to save the world.
The Infinite is the first book in The Leap Cycle series, Patience Agbabi’s book has received rave reviews from literary stars, I love that the books main character has Autism but that the book isn’t about that, just part of who she is.
Recommended for ages 8 – 11 years old

The Bolds

The Bolds are just your average family, they have a nice house in Teddington, they have good jobs and they have two fun loving children, so nothing unusual there then..other than the fact that they’re hyenas of course! making the most of a tragic situation, the Bolds adopted the identities of two tourists who came to a sticky end and have been living as Mr & Mrs Bold ever since, with their twin children Bobby and Betty, they’ve been making a real success of it too until a nosey neighbour gets involved.

Hi jinks and bad jokes (provided by Mr Bolds job as a christmas cracker joke writer) make this a laugh out loud read, it all comes from the mind of Julian Clary coupled with fantastic illustrations by David Roberts, I’m not always a fan of celebrities turned children’s authors but this series is a winner, particularly good for getting reluctant readers on there way!

works well as a read out loud book for ages 4 upwards due to the jokes and the easy to follow narrative, a confident reader could read alone from ages 6+ but the stories are good enough for older kids too.
